Sigmund Thun Gorge
Walk through roaring waters and towering rock walls in one of the region’s most dramatic natural landscapes.
About Sigmund Thun Gorge
If you’re looking to swap mountain peaks for something a little different, Sigmund Thun Gorge is well worth a visit. Just outside Kaprun, this narrow canyon carves its way through the rock, shaped over thousands of years by powerful glacial meltwater. Today, it’s an easy and unforgettable walk along wooden paths that hug the cliffs above rushing water below.
An Adventure For All Ages
This isn’t a long hike, it takes around 30 minutes to walk from one end of the gorge to the other, but what it lacks in distance, it makes up for in atmosphere. The sound of water echoing through the rock walls is something you feel as much as hear. Kids love the sense of adventure, and adults tend to be surprised by just how dramatic it is.
At the top, you’ll come out by Klammsee, a peaceful reservoir surrounded by walking paths and mountain views. It’s a great place to stop, relax, or even dip your feet in the cold water on a hot summer day.
Great in the Day, and at Night
If you’re around in summer, check the local calendar, the gorge hosts a few evening events, including torch-lit walks and the beautifully named “Mystical Night of Water.” It’s a different way to experience the landscape, with lights and sound giving the gorge a magical glow.
