About Kitzsteinhorn Glacier

When you visit Zell am See, it’s impossible to ignore the sheer presence of the Kitzsteinhorn. Towering above the valley, this glacier isn’t just a scenic backdrop — it’s a playground for anyone who loves the mountains, no matter the season.

A Different World Above 3,000 Metres

Take a ride up the mountain and you’ll find yourself in a whole new environment, icy, vast, and breathtaking. The journey up is part of the experience, with multiple gondolas taking you from meadows to the heart of the Alps in under an hour. At the top, the Top of Salzburg” viewing platform offers a jaw-dropping panorama over hundreds of peaks, where you’re literally standing at the highest publicly accessible point in SalzburgerLand.

Ski, Hike, Bike – or Just Take It All In

In winter, the glacier becomes one of the most reliable places to ski in Austria, with long runs, deep snow, and wide-open pistes. It’s a favourite among early-season skiers and those chasing snow in spring. There’s also a lively freeride scene, with marked off-piste routes and safety briefings for those heading beyond the trails.

In summer, the glacier offers something completely different: walking trails with unforgettable views, guided tours with National Park rangers, and even the chance to play in the snow at the ICE ARENA, long after the valley has warmed up. For bikers, three epic freeride trails descend from 2,500 metres down to the valley, they’re fast, flowing, and full of adrenaline.

A family Friendly Day Out

Even if you’re not skiing or biking, the Kitzsteinhorn is still an incredible place to visit. Kids love the snow fun in summer, while adults can enjoy a drink at the mountaintop restaurant or stroll through the Gipfelwelt 3000, a fascinating indoor gallery built into the mountain itself. It’s also one of the few places you can walk through tunnels carved into solid rock and end up looking out across Austria’s highest peaks.
